Set in the heart of Scotland, the Stirling area benefits from outstanding natural locations that include stunning rivers & lochs, majestic hills & mountains and picturesque villages & towns. As a highly accessible area, with cinematic locations, historic landmarks, and National Park status, Stirling has it all and this is evidenced in the number of large-scale productions that have chosen to film in the Stirling area over the years.
Outlander film locations
One of these productions is the historical, time-travelling, romantic ‘juggernaut’ known as Outlander! If you’re one of ‘Heughan’s Heughligans’ (the Scottish actor Sam Heughan plays the part of Jamie in the series) then you’ll know that Doune Castle in Stirling took a starring role as “Castle Leoch” in the TV series. The “Outlander effect” has been credited with a record-breaking surge in visitors to Doune Castle, with the castle having seen a 226.5% increase in visitors since the series began.

Several Stirling locations also appear in the 2018 Netflix blockbuster, Outlaw King. Starring Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce and directed by David Mackenzie, the film tells the remarkable story of Robert the Bruce who transformed from defeated nobleman, to reluctant King, to outlaw hero over the course of an extraordinary year. Outlaw King is the biggest budget, feature film ever to be produced in Scotland.

Winterfell at Doune Castle
Doune Castle was also the original Winterfell for the pilot episode of the world-conquering, HBO series…yes, many of your favourite Game of Thrones characters including Sansa, Jamie, Ned, Jon & Arya once gathered at this enchanting, medieval, courtyard castle to film ‘Winterfell’ (Series 1, episode 1) and the rest is history! It was also one of only four locations in the UK renamed (temporarily) to mark the Digital Download release of the final season of Game of Thrones.
