Killearn Children’s Book Festival

Killearn Children’s Book Festival is taking place in Killearn Village Hall on Sunday 2nd September. 10 of Scotland’s finest children’s authors, illustrators and storytellers are lined up for a fun and interactive day of activity. You can expect everything from drawing, colouring and crafting to storytelling, poetry, dancing and music.

Join author Chae Strathie for delicious fun as he reads from his award-winning book Gorilla Loves Vanilla. Get ready for stories, music, puppets, creativity . . . and a big scoop of silliness!

Teddy Bear Picnic Lunch

12 – 1pm

Three Sisters Bake Café will rustle up a tasty picnic lunch for rumbly tummies. Please book this in advance. Favourite teddy bear welcome too! Snacks and refreshments for adults will be available on the day.

Alan’s upbeat books riff on the positive side of growing up; having fun, getting the best from yourself, thinking big, caring for others and being happy in a busy world. In Alan Dapré’s zany new series for young readers, we meet Porridge the (world’s only) Tartan Cat! Porridge lives by Loch Ness with the quirky McFun family. Everyone has a super secret – or two – and Porridge is always there to lend a helping paw when things go awry.

Nature Stories, Emily Dodd

Take a journey through the forests of Scotland and meet some of the wildlife that makes its home there. Meet Rory the otter, Cameron the capercaillie, Bagpipe the black grouse and Hazel, the water squirting squirrel. Join author Emily for interactive stories and science and bring the forest to life with your imagination.

Crafts and Stories, Lynne Rickards

1 – 2pm

Join Lynne Rickards for a fun story reading and craft session celebrating comical puffins, cute red squirrels and a host of other Scottish wildlife. Lynne will read Harris the Hero, Skye the Puffling and her newest book, Rowan the Red Squirrel.

Lost for Words Bookmaking Workshop, Natalie Russell

LOST FOR WORDS BOOKMAKING WORKSHOP

Tapir has a sharp pencil and a nice new notebook but he doesn’t know what to write . . . ? Have you ever been Lost for Words . . . ? Join Natalie Russell in this fun book making workshop – explore creating new characters and writing inventive stories with the help from some animal friends and a mystery object.

Celebrating her award-winning children’s book, ‘Robert the Bruce, King of Scots’, illustrator Jill Calder will inspire you to dive into history and draw the kings, queens, castles and creatures from medieval Scotland then teach you to illustrate and make your very own picture book!

How to Draw Your Dragon

Join top illustrator, Kate Leiper (‘An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Mythical Creatures’) and have fun creating your very own dragon. Kate will share some of her hot tips on dragon drawing and introduce you to some of her amazing creature creations. So whether your dragon is a ferocious, fire-breathing beast or a masterfully mischievous monster, fire up your imagination and get ready to roar – Rrrraaaarrrggghhh!!!

Make Your Own Guidebook, Eilidh Muldoon

In this session you will make your own folded book introducing Scotland to a visitor who has never been here before…a friend from another country, or perhaps an alien from another planet?! Where would you tell them to go? What would you want them to see? You will learn how to make a folded book that is simple, fun and easy to do at home. Join Eilidh for a session of drawing as we fill your books with pictures of all the things you love about Scotland – people, places and fun things to do.

The Galloway Chilli, Shalla Gray

The Galloway Chilli

Come and meet the Galloway Chilli! She’s fearless and feisty and she certainly does not want to be eaten by the farmer, the cat, the dog and the cow, who all want her for their tea! Shalla Gray is a children’s author and illustrator from Galloway in South-West Scotland. Her beautifully illustrated picture books showcase the natural landscapes of Scotland with entertaining stories too! With storytelling, craft activities and games.

What are Words? And Why? Simon Puttock

2 – 3pm

What are Words? And Why?

Simon will be reading stories, answering questions (his socks will probably be blue) and asking What Are Words? And Why? You could be making some brand new ones and deciding what they’re for – perhaps they’ll even turn into stories!
